myopia control
Myopia is a fancy word for nearsighted. Research has shown patients who develop myopia as young children (age 8-12) tend to experience worse myopia than patients who develop this condition as older children or adolescents. Onset age is one of the most important factors in determining how someone’s eyes are affected later in life.
If both parents are myopic, the greater the chance of their children being myopic. The more children spend time inside and are using digital devices, the more myopic they are likely to become!
Fortunately for us, we have tools to help minimize this progression.
Distance-centered Multifocals- MiSight contact lens, Biofinity Multifocal, Acuvue Multifocoal, Multifocal Naturalvue contact lens to be worn during the day
Orthokeratology - Moonlens rigid gas permeable lenses (these act like a retainer for the cornea) to be worn at night
Atropine pharmaceutical therapy - nightly use of eyedrops from a special pharmacy
